Transcend 32GB Counterfeit USB Flash Drive Found On eBay – JetFlash V30

Transcend joins Sony and Kingston to have counterfeit USB Flash Drives sold on eBay. JetFlash V30 line had a maximum genuine capactiy of 16GB in size. Transcend, like Kingston uses colour coding to distinguish different capacities. Currently targeted by counterfeit flash sellers is the 4GB model that is being supersized to astonishing 32GB capacity. It this 4GB model is also pretenting to confuse and to sneak in at 16GB a genuine size. Only the true 16GB has the pink band not green.

Sold on eBay by hellopetpet was a 32GB Flash drive.

Transcend-32GB

Notice the colour band is green. The colour coding chart for the JetFlash V30 shows:

JetFlashV30

So green would be a 4GB usb flash drive and not a 32GB flash drive. The ebayer who performed the testing with H2testw 1.4 reported what size? 4GB!

This same model (green code) is for sale right now on ebay as 16GB by…

How many other eBay sellers have recently sold the green 4GB JetFlash V30 at a supersized false capacity?

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Report your fake if testing confirms you have purchased fake capacity flash memory on ebay.

  9. Go have a look at the Transcend website. The Jetflash V30 is only sold in capacities to 16G with the green band being a 4G. What a pity these guys get away with giving a brilliant product a bad name with their fakes.

  10. 2011 and its still happening, latest victim 😦 Boy we DO NOT LEARN, never bought anything unless it’s from a reputable store. Also bought it from a guy at the robot “Great Deal” of crap. South Africa ,JHB , the guy pleaded that he needed money for food. Felt sorry and contributed to crime. This was a valuable lesson. There may be people who really need the money and may sell legal, legitimate goods, to make a living but thanx to the select few we all suffer. I hope he used the money for good. Ha Ha NOT

  11. I also bought 2 of the same trash thingys. I went back to the robot where I bought the 1 and the guy gladly exchanged it for a 16GB which works fine. He told me that he had lost about R1500 exchanging someting didnt realise was fake. He told me he got his supply in Jo’burg and the supplier argues that everything is fine with the drives. Anyway, I found a way around the 1 I still have. The 32G will still function fine AS A 4G if u do a solder patch on it’s circuit board to limit it from writing to anything bigger than 4G. The guy that did it 4 me explained it to me as follows. “If u have a device thats telling ur pc it has a capacity of 32G, then it will write data on places that the device actiually does not support, thus loosing data (everything written outside of the actual 4G the device can hold) – In some cases 2G if u got conned with a 2G-32G device. Basicaly, the guy I know soldered back the 4G limit and now my fake 32G functions perfectly at 4G with the limit in place. It cannot write to memory it does not have. I lost my money but atleast I have 4G working. He explained something about the 4K file system on NTFS but I really cant remember everything. So if u r stuck wif a DUD 32G, u can atleast use 4G properly IF YOU HAVE IT LIMITED TO 4 GIGS so that NOTHING can be written to anything bigger than 4G… Yes we got caught in the scam, BUT, we can still make this thing work for us:-).

  24. Ivan,
If it has a green band and is showing 32GB then it is counterfeit and will corrupt your files eventually – probably once you’ve filled just under 4GB of space.

  25. I also bought one at Midrand Allandale.

1st one wouldn’t save anything. Saved teh folder but no contents. Changed it, Now seems to be working. Properties show 32G.

it has a green band. Paid R180 and then R60 to swop it!!!

    Are they really counterfeit?

  26. I just bought the fake at the robot outside Greenstone (Edenvale). I feel so cheated… it did seem to show 31.2GB but I tried to format it and it won’t work now. No program seems to recover it either. Darn! Strange thing though is that the serial number does seem to register on the Transcend website.

  29. I also bought a 32 gig Flash Drive (Transcend – with the green band) at a robot in Witbank, I could copy files to it once, but could thereafter not retrieve or copy again so it`s a fake, I should have known, as they say if something is to good to be true, it probably is. The worst is knowing I tried to help yourself & the seller at the same time and then being ripped-off, I wont buy anything ever again from a street vendor (So these suppliers are actually doing great damage to these gullable black street vendors who think they have a job). i`m sending your article to the Witbank news tomorrow to warn others in the area. Catch me once shame on you!…catch me twice shame on me!
    Thanks

  31. Hi Braam,
It is possible to reprogram a flash drive back to its’ original capacity if you can find the right programming tool (all depends on the chips used) but it really isn’t worthwhile. It can be a long process finding the right tool to fix it back to the original capacity. If your reprogramming is successful (and often it isn’t) what you will end up with is a low capacity flash drive (probably less than 4GB) that is likely to be unreliable.

This is because the memory chips used in fakes are low quality factory rejects which are prone to failure. Normally such chips would be destroyed but some factory workers sneak the failed chips out to be used in fakes! There are a couple of posts on this blog about solutions that users have found for certain chips and there are more suggestions on other blogs – but never trust a reprogrammed drive – always have your data backed-up elsewhere!!

  36. I bought FOUR!, yes four! of these 32GB puppies, and they work like lightning (just transfered 2GB in under 1min. 30 seconds. Super fast on my dell, no loosing data or corrput data problems. Only problem is that there is no hole in the back of the flash dive for the lanyard. but I sorted that out with a little hand drill for the back hole.

I bough four to put onto bidorbuy, but now that i know they are fake, I am removing them and trying to do refunds etc…, hey we learn the hard way 😦 You are right… without this post I would not have known any the wiser, busy testing the capacity and rest of the details… oh so right, if it is too good to be true….

  38. If somethings to cheap to be true…
I also just got the 32G one with the green band for R100. I took it out and tried to put the lanyard’s string through so I won’t lose the little thing. It wouldn’t go through. It looks like a hole but it’s not. That’s when I googled the “Transcend jf v 30 / 32gb” and found this page. I know I have a fake and it’s going straight into the rubbish, I don’t want to contaminate my Mac with such a piece of $#!%.
    Will we ever learn?!?!

  40. You got yourself a fake Transcend, Wayne! The computer just reports what the drive has been programmed to show, then you find that (though files “appear” to be copied to it) most of them are lost or corrupted. Eventually they stop working at all.

  50. Hi VINDOD
That suggests it is a fake capacity device, as this is exactly what happens with these. Everything seems to be written to the drive but then when you go to use it later files have either vanished altogether or become corrupted.
