Fighting flash fraud on Ebay

The authors of this blog want to elimnate flash fraud on Ebay

Are the flash memory items sold by this UK ebayer genuine?

with 18 comments

UK ebay member bits.bobs73_123 lists a lot of Kingston flash memory items for sale at auction – over 400 have been sold. We don’t see how this seller can be making a profit at the prices that most seem to sell at if they are geninunely the capacity advertised. It could be that this ebay member has bought counterfeits from a fraudulent wholesaler.

So far the only negative comment has been from a buyer who didn’t receive the item, but this could simply mean that buyers are not testing their items. As always we strongly advise ebayers to test all flash memory with the free program h2testw.

Report in to SOSFakeFlash if your testing confirms you have a false capacity device.

  1. Well Gareth,
If they are actually genuine then buyers won’t have any problems and everyone will be happy – so what’s your problem?

  3. Hello Gareth,

So you feel that you are being accused of selling fake flash do you? Does that mean you are seller bits.bobs73_123 after all? We see there are still 16GB Kingston flash drives listed at auction by bits.bobs73_123. If these were genuine we don’t think that they would still be listed at auction as it looks as though a loss would have been made on just about every sale.

  5. We are curious Gareth,
How on earth can we be scammers? We’re not selling anyone anything, just advising people to avoid fake flash memory.

  9. Proper little charmer, aren’t you Gareth?

We have only ever had comments like yours from people who turned out to be selling fake flash memory. If you were a genuine buyer defending a genuine seller we don’t think you would have reacted like this!

  11. I think I have made that perfectly clear. Had (for example) my video students used fake flash drives to save the movies they were making then they would have lost their work and failed their assignments.

    August 3, 2010 at 2:43 PM

  12. Well Gareth,
I think my students would disagree – don’t think they’d have been very happy if I had not ensured that they were not saving their assignments to fake flash drives.

  17. Hi Gareth,
Seems you got a bargain then! Let’s hope other buyers find the same as we thought items sold by this seller seemed too cheap to be genuine. Could you possibly give us your ebay ID and the item number so that we can check it out?

  18. Just had one delivered that I bought from this seller on Ebay, it tests fine as the stated capacity. I was also able to fill the device with avi’s, and all play back perfectly.

    So NOT a fake
