Fighting flash fraud on Ebay

The authors of this blog want to elimnate flash fraud on Ebay

UK ebay member heeds warning that flash drives were counterfeit

Kingston do not make the DataTraveler 200 in 256GB capacity as the ebayer who listed this would have realised had this seller taken the simple precaution of checking the Kingston website before buying flash drives to sell on ebay. This ebayer obviously bought from a fraudulent supplier.

Unlike some sellers who ignore warnings from other members about fake capacity flash memory it seems this sensible ebayer followed the advice of the member who got in touch as all listings for Kingston flash drives by this seller were ended early. We wish more ebayers had the good sense to follow advice!

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Report in to SOSFakeFlash if testing confirms you have purchased fake capacity flash memory on ebay.

UPDATE 23/12/09 at 2.00pm:
Oh dear – seems we were a bit too quick off the mark in thinking seller good_as_gold had done the sensible thing. The seller presumably tested but has not paid proper attention to what the ebay member told them and has now listed these as faulty! They are not faulty, they are counterfeit fraudulent items with nowhere near the advertised capacity and their sale is illegal!!

The seller states in the listing:

The memory sticks come from reliable supplier in China, all tested and high quality. There is a chance they are copies!

The supplier may well be reliable – can be relied on to sell counterfeit fake capacity items of extraordinarily low quality!!

Seller good_as_gold has also relisted the counterfeit and fake capacity 128GB Kingston drives as faulty – don’t think buyers will be very happy!! Perhaps some kind ebayer will point this seller in the direction of this blog – maybe then good_as_gold will understand the issue better!!

UPDATE 27/12/09
Looks as though this seller finally understood as listings have been removed again. We hope the seller now refunds any buyers and manages to get a refund from the fraudulent supplier.

UPDATE 28/12/09
Seems we were wrong to feel releived!! Listings from good_as_gold for the “faulty” 256GB Kingston flash drives are back up again! These are not faulty they are totally fake and will corrupt users’ files!! The seller has been told this by at least two different ebay members now so there is no excuse for continuing with sales. We can only conclude that this ebayer cares more about money than fellow ebay members.
