Massive fake USB flash drive in private listing on ebay UK

leave a comment »

Seller leedavidjames offers a 500GB Sony USB flash drive in ebay listing number 260548142771. 500GB is a capacity that does not and will never exist in flash drives. Sony do not make flash drives of higher capacity than 32GB and 500GB is a capacity only used for hard drives, not flash drives. This USB flash drive is a fake that corrupts files.

The listing is private, which we consider highly suspect – nobody can tell what someone bought in a private listing. This type of listing is not intended for this sort of item and it’s use here makes us suspect the seller knows this is fake. Never buy flash memory items in private listings, they are almost certain to be fake capacity items that corrupt files.

Not only has leedavidjames listed this obvious fake USB flash drive in a private listing, this ebay member is prepared to rig feedback, as shown by private listing number 260548204170 below:

The seller says:

good feedback given in return for good feedback. must request pic if u want me to send it via e-mail

Well that’s clear then – all the buyer gets is feedback and of course the seller gets feedback too. Both the use of a private listing and the lack of a physical item for sale are breaches of ebay policies. We are almost tempted to buy a few and leave some big fat negs!

It looks like we may have come across a rather underhand seller here – no one will know what anyone bought so the seller’s feedback won’t be any guide to buyers whatsoever. Looks very sneaky to us.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Report your fake if testing confirms you have purchased fake capacity flash memory on ebay.

UPDATE:
It seems this ebayer (quite rightly) was booted off ebay. We wish that ebay was as efficient at getting rid of fraudsters in the far east as they are at getting rid of european sellers!
