fantastic fake 500GB HP USB flash drive on ebay Australia

with 2 comments

There is no such thing as a 500GB USB flash drive/thumb pen/pendrive, and never will be – there will only ever be hard drives in this capacity. This is a very obvious fake. We thank Matt for alerting us to this listing!

This flash drive’s real capacity is probably nearer to 500 megabytes than 500 gigabytes. A fake capacity flash drive corrupts files once the true capacity is exceeded. Trying to save a 4GB video file to this drive would probably be enough to result in corruption. Seller jacob4990 says in the listing:

Believe it or not, this is a 500gb USB.. No more big external drives needed when you carry a 500gb USB.. people have contacted me saying that there is no such thing as a 500gb usb.. i bought quite a few from the USA, and i checked the properties and it has roughly 490gb of free space.. i have been using mine for a few months and i have no problem what so ever.. im assuming it is not an original HP, although the packaging says so.. i will rather be honest and sell this item at a low cost instead of saying its an original HP and sell it at an easy $2000.. the bottom line is that it works and has roughly 490gb of free space on there.. they come in 4 different colors of pink, blue, black or silver.. please feel free to send me a message at any time

Looking at the properties of a flash drive is totally meaningless – the only way to discover the true capacity is to test it. I have some 512mb flash drives I have been using for 3 years without running out of file space because I don’t use these for big files (such as video) – so the fact that the seller has been using one for some time means absolutely nothing. As long as only small files have been saved and the true capacity of the drive has not been exceeded then even a fake may operate correctly.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Report your fake if testing confirms you have purchased fake capacity flash memory on ebay.

  1. Do you think it might be a typo, or a n00b that doesn’t really know mb from gb?
Just trying to give them the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise it’s a truly clumsy scam!

Could be either, whatever no one makes a 500 Gigabyte flash drive (YET) so be aware..
