Kingston USB flash drives and memory cards from ebayer imp-tech

We think it highly unlikely that the Kingston USB flash drives and memory cards being sold in private ebay auctions by imp-tech are genuine. Buyers can check whether or not a Kingston flash drive is genuine quite easily – here are the steps:

  1. Look at the back of the pack – is there a serial number?
  2. If there is no serial number (there should be a label showing this) then it is sure to be a fake capacity counterfeit that corrupts files – but the presence of a serial number does not, in itself, guarantee it is genuine.

  3. Look at the USB connector – is there engraving on it giving details about the flash drive?
  4. If there is no engraving you can be sure it is a counterfeit that will trash your files – but again, the presence of engraving does not in itself guarantee it is genuine.

  5. If both a serial number and engraving are present try verifying the serial number with Kingston.
  6. If Kingston cannot verify the serial number then you have a fake capacity counterfeit and your data will become lost or corrupted after a while.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

flash drive, memory card or MP3 player not working

Many thousands of people will have receive a memory card, USB flash drive or MP player as a Christmas present. A lot of them (especially if your well-meaning friend or relative purchased on ebay!) will turn out to be fakes. A fake flash memory item cannot save the amount of data advertised – few can really save as much as 4GB – most can’t save more than 2GB.

If you have a problem with accessing files on the USB flash drive, memory card or MP player you got in your Christmas stocking it is likely that you got a fake. There is a very handy little program called h2testw you can use to check flash memory – we suggest you use it!!

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Test flash memory items from ebay seller jozron with h2testw now!

with one comment

Why would Hong Kong based seller jozron feel the need to use private ebay auctions for flash memory items? Usually when sellers do this the items are obviously too cheap to be genuine but items from this seller are not cheap!!

We wonder if this could be to hide what was sold in case of complaints – and it seems, looking at the seller’s feedback that there have been a few. flash drives and memory cards from informavideo sure to be fake

It seems that ebay seller informavideo (registered on ebay France) has entered into a dropshipping arrangement with a supplier shipping items directly from Hong Kong. This was a grave error of judgement on the part of informavideo as this means that the seller has no chance to check that merchandise is genuine as it is shipped directly by the supplier to the end buyer.

As this seller’s flash memory items (both USB flash drives and memory cards) are shipped out of Hong Kong we are pretty certain that they will be fake capacity and buyers will find that their USB flash drive or memory card corrupts files.

Private ebay auctions for flash memory from mr-mrs-wickerman

leave a comment »

When we see private ebay auctions for flash memory items like the one above from seller mr-mrs-wickerman it always makes us a little suspicious, especially when (as in this case) the photographs are poor. A bit of digging around the seller’s feedback and the items sold made us even more suspicious!

If you bought a flash memory item from ebay seller mr-mrs-wickerman we suggest you test it immediately with h2test as we think you are at risk of data loss and file corruption. Among the flash memory items sold on ebay by mr-mrs-wickerman were a number of 16GB Kingston DataTraveler flash drives like the one below:

Buyers can check whether or not a Kingston flash drive is genuine quite easily – here are the steps:

  1. Look at the back of the pack – is there a serial number?
  2. If there is no serial number (there should be a label showing this) then it is sure to be a fake capacity counterfeit that corrupts files – but the presence of a serial number does not, in itself, gaurantee it is genuine.

  3. Look at the USB connector – is there engraving on it giving details about the flash drive?
  4. If there is no engraving you can be sure it is a counterfeit that will trash your files – but again, the presence of engraving does not in itself gaurantee it is genuine.

  5. If both a serial number and engraving are present try verifying the serial number with Kingston.
  6. If Kingston cannot verify the serial number then you have a fake capacity counterfeit and your data will become lost or corrupted after a while.

If you bought a second hand Kingston flash drive that does not have the packaging the only thing you can do other than checking for engraving is to test the drive. There is no need to test the whole drive – most counterfeits have a real capacity of 4GB or less so testing up to 8GB should be sufficient to determine whether it is genuine or not.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Test memory cards sold on ebay by sagesconn with h2testw

leave a comment »

An ebayer reported to us that he bought one of these 32GB micro SD/TF SDHC memory cards from sagesconn and found that the real capacity was only 2GB – here is what this ebayer had to say about it:

Thought I was buying from a reputable UK-based seller at a realistic price with this one (£79.98).

Device failed write tests at around 2GB and upset my HTC Desire Android phone, just like the fake Hong-Kong device I reported previously. This arrived in apparently good Kingston packaging. I’ve reported the issue to Kingston-Technology Europe who requested good-quality photos of the item and packaging.

The seller has already given me a PayPal refund. Looking at his other listings of similar devices at silly prices he must know he is selling fakes.

Initially we thought the ebayer was probably wrong about seller sagesconn knowing that he is selling fakes – a lot of ebay sellers don’t test their flash memory items to ensure they are genuine and don’t even know that there is such a thing as fake capacity flash memory. Often they do not know the true cost of flash memory items.

However, it was obvious that this ebayer was entirely right about some of the memory cards from sagesconn being sold at silly prices. We though the seller might not know it, but were pretty certain that sagesconn bought from one of the many fraudulent wholesale outlets that sell fake capacity and counterfeit flash memory items which corrupt files.

Investigations and developments since the buyer first reported this listing to us have made us wonder whether (although the seller refunded the buyer) this could possibly be yet another case of deliberate fraud. We are not going to present these findings here – but they may be presented to the UK police.

Here, however, is something that anyone can check out with reference to the card the buyer reported:
Kingston does not sell 32GB microSDHC cards, the highest capacity on the Kingston site is 16GB.

Examination of the card and packaging showed that there was a miss-spelling on the back of the pack – not uncommon with fakes – along with a few other things that were suspect. Kingston confirmed that the card was fake and sagesconn no longer seems to be listing these. However sagesconn has not removed the dodgy looking listings for other memory cards.

We strongly advise sagesconn to remove all ebay listings for memory cards as all are likely to be fake capacity – and where a brand name is involved (as in the case of the card that was reported to us) also counterfeit. The seller should check the cards and refund anyone who already bought a fake.

Selling counterfeit items is a criminal offence in the UK and sagesconn could face a prison sentence if convicted of this in court.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

if you bought a memory card on ebay from11vinod11 test with h2testw immediately

leave a comment »

A buyer who tested this micro SD card sold on ebay by 11vinod11 reports that the actual capacity of the card is only 2GB not 32GB. Where flash memory has been programmed to a false capacity like this it corrupts files once the true capacity is full.

It seems that 11vinod11 is a bit of a slippery customer as the buyer was accused of damaging the card by using the program h2testw to test the card. H2testw is a non destructive test which simply tries to write 1GB files made up of ones and zeros to fill the reported capacity.

If the memory is ok then the test runs without errors. If it is fake or faulty then a report showing at what point errors in writing and reading data begins. This information indicates the true capacity of fake flash memory items.

It seems that 11vinod11 has a long standing habit of buying from known fake flash fraudsters including xoldskool, bid2buying, best2all8888 and crystalpalace1987. We wonder if the memory cards sold by this ebayer were actually purchased from fraudsters on ebay.

Anyone who bought a memory card from 11vinod11 is advised to test it immediately with h2testw. then open a paypal dispute to get their money back if the card is fake capacity. Given this seller’s attitude it is a complete waste of time trying to communicate directly with 11vinod11.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

For peace of mind and to avoid ending up with corrupt or lost pictures (or other files) we strongly suggest buyers test their cards to make sure they are genuine.

Return of proven fake flash fraudster cymemory to selling on ebay

We were aware of fraudulent ebay seller cymemory before this blog was ever started (on 24th November 2008) and there is evidence about this fraudster selling fake capacity flash drives which was published elsewhere on the Internet about a month before we started this blog.

This fraudster vanished off ebay in November 2009, a few days after we published an article reporting our suspicions about the memory cards from the seller being fake too. Now this seller is back selling USB flash drives (models that are proven fakes), the same SD cards we wrote about in November 2009 and MP players.

Do not buy any flash memory items from this proven fraudster!! The feedback does not reflect the truth about this seller as few people (especially before this seller vanished off ebay when fewer people were aware there was such a thing as fake memory) actually test flash memory items properly before leaving feedback.

If you were unlucky enough to buy from cymemory before coming across this post then test the item with h2testw to find out what the real capacity is. We are certain that you will find that your USB flash drive, memory card or MP card will have a fake capacity, which corrupts files once the true capacity of the memory has been filled.

If (or rather when) your item fails testing with h2testw leave cymemory a negative – this serves two functions: warns other ebayers and leads to ebay suspending fraudsters if there are enough complaints. We’d suggest you include the following; so that other victims find this post:

Google: fightflashfraud cymemory

Report the seller’s other listings for the same item to ebay.

Open an ebay/paypal dispute and claim a refund. Do not give into any bribery or threats from the seller if cymemory tries to get you to remove the neg.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Are USB flash drives and memory cards from ebayer rz_trading genuine?

leave a comment »

If the 32GB and 64GB Kingston DataTraveler 200 USB flash drives and 16GB Sony Pro Duo memory cards sold at auction on ebay by rz_trading are genuine then so far this seller is making a loss overall. This makes us wonder why this seller continued auctioning them – could it be that they are actually cheap counterfeits purchased from a fraudulent supplier? We think so.

If we are wrong (unlikely) the DataTraveler flash drives are genuine they will have individual serial numbers which can be verified by Kingston. If we are right and the flash drives and memory cards are counterfeits then the capacity will be fake – which corrupts files.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

ebayer d_patriart seems to be dropshipping fake flash from Hong Kong

leave a comment »

Seller d_patriart seems to be dropshipping the 128GB Kingston DataTraveler 200 flash drives in this ebay listing and the Sony Pro Duo memory cards in other listings from Hong Kong. Flash memory sold by d_patriart is certain to be counterfeit and fake capacity, which corrupts files. The seller basically admits this in the listing shown above:

*Please note: this product is a very high quality COPY of the original Kingston USB Drive, Made in China*

As it is a copy it is counterfeit – so this seller is breaking the law by selling counterfeit items! Seems that seller d_patriart does not realise that he or she could be arrested, prosecuted and sent to prison for this offence – committed in full public view!! We’d advise d_patriart to end listings immediately, refund all buyers and pray that the police don’t come knocking at the door!

Beware of flash memory from ebay flash fraudster crystalpalace1987

leave a comment »

Despite the fact that ebay seller crystalpalace1987 is a proven fraudster who has sold many fake capacity flash memory items on ebay since we first reported suspicions about this seller back in September 2009, a couple of months after this ID was registered on ebay. By December 2009 crystalpalace1987 (identified as a member of a known fraud gang) became a powerseller despite evidence that proof of fraud had been obtained being published on the Internet in November 2009.

This fraudster is still selling fake flash memory items on ebay and (due to a combination of deviousness and the foolishness of most buyers on ebay who don’t test flash memory items on ebay before leaving feedback) crystalpalace1987 now has a huge positive feedback score of almost 8000 and a 99.1% rating!!

Any flash memory from ebay seller crystalpalace1987 (USB flash drives, MP players, memory cards) is bound to be fake capacity, which corrupts files. If you bought a flash memory item from this fraudster do not leave feedback until you have tested your item thoroughly!

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.
