To ppokwuma: selling counterfeit Kingston on ebay is a crime!!!

leave a comment »

We first reported about ebayer ppokwuma selling counterfeit Kingston USB flash drives on ebay on May 13th. The drive we showed in that article is one that exists (the 128GB Kingston DataTraveler 200) but the seller also listed the DT200 in 256GB – a capacity that it is not made in. A buyer who had looked at the Kingston website pointed this out as you will see from the feedback for ebay item number 310219929187:

The information in a question on May 13th (the day we first published about this seller) should have prompted the removal of all Kingston USB flash drives from sale by ppokwuma whilst he or she checked them out. As you can see from subsequent questions for seller ppokwuma the listing was not removed and the seller refused to take responsibility for the item. It was eventually sold for $192.49 on 20th May.

We expect that the buyer will be less than delighted when he or she eventually realises he or she was sold a pig in a poke and has been left holding the bag. Having finally realised that the supplier was fraudulent ppokwuma now has this listing:

There are a couple of questions on this listing and the answer to the one at the bottom (June 1st) clearly shows that ppokwuma has failed to fully understand the implications of an imitation brand name item of any sort, let alone the implications where flash memory is involved. So, for the information of both seller ppokwuma and any buyers who are unsure here is a breif outline:

  1. An imitation brand name item is known as a counterfeit.
  2. The sale of counterfeit items is a criminal offence.
  3. In the case of flash memory a counterfeit always has a fake capacity.
  4. A fake capacity flash memory item corrupts files once the true capacity is full.

We hope this makes it clear to everyone!!

An honest seller refunds buyers who were sold fake or faulty items when they realise – will ppokwuma??

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you (OR WORSE STILL – YOUR CUSTOMERS) run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Beware of flash memory items from Singapore based ebay seller the.moon.rocker007 – they are certain to be fakes which trash your data. The ebay ID the.moon.rocker007 belongs to a fraud ring in Singapore which fightflashfraud has been watching for some time.

If you see any flash drive in the packaging shown in this ebay listing by UK seller advent6414 or with a shiny litte capacity sticker like the one in this picture steer well clear as it is pretty certain to be a fake that corrupts files because the capacity is false.

Every flash drive tested by members of the fightflashfraud team that came in this packaging or had one of these sticker proved to be a fake. Seller remote.f1 is a member of an ebay fraud gang in Singapore that we at fightflashfraud have been watching for some time. No goods ever change hands in these fake transactions.

Once the feedback looks good and will fool the majority of ebayers these fraudsters launch into real sales. fake capacity 128GB flash drive from ebayer in Belgium will corrupt files

This 128GB USB flash drive is a notorious fake that has been sold on ebay for years in capacities from 4GB to a fantasic 500GB. So far even the lowest capacities advertise proved to be fake with the result that this model of flash drive always corrupts files even when sold as 4GB let alone 128GB.

Seller haliwell3 no doubt bought these from one of the fraudulent wholesale outlets in China (the source of fraudulently programmed flash memory that corrupts data) and may be unaware that these are fakes. Never buy this model of flash drive. In the listing for ebay item number 270540970351 seller littlest-hobo shows a screenshot of feedback – but as all the items are hidden by using private listings this screenshot is totally meaningless! As well as this buy it now listing the seller has auctions at £4.99 with 99p P&P.

We can’t see how the seller can make a profit at the buy it now price £6.50 with free P&P let alone at less than this! We have a sneaking suspicion that these could turn out to be fake capacity flash drives which corrupt files. They were probably purchased from a fraudulent wholesaler in China.

Huge feedback scores and high positive % on ebay mean nothing

leave a comment »

If you buy things on ebay do not be fooled into thinking that ebay sellers with a huge feedback score and a high percentage of positive comments are necessarily trustworthy.

The screenshot above shows a current listing from proven ebay fraudster wendy2008268. As you can see from the screenshot this seller has a huge feedback score and a 99.4% positive score, yet wendy2008268 has sold fake flash memory items on ebay for a long time – probably at least 18 months.

There are probably thousands of ebayers who have been defrauded by this seller – worse still, some of them may have lost important files by saving them to a fake flash drive or memory card from this seller.

Are You a UK buyer who bought a counterfeit Sony item?

leave a comment »

If a Sony product you purchased malfunctions and you suspect it to be counterfeit, we advise you to inform Sony. Here are the contact details we found:

Sony Customer Information Centre
Sony United Kingdom Limited
Jays Close
Viables
Basingstoke
RG22 4SB

Phone 0845 6000 124

There may be a phone number specifically related to fraud – but as none of our team bought fake Sony products we have no information on this. If someone else does know more, please let us know.

If the product you have purchased is counterfeit, you are entitled to contact the person or the retailer who sold it to you and demand a refund.

If the seller is in the UK we would also advise you to contact and inform the relevant authorities: e.g. Trading Standards, HM Revenue & Customs and the Police.

Unfortunately, it seems that there is a lack of international agreement about dealing with fraud on the Internet – so if you bought from someone outside the UK you may not have much joy at the moment. However – if we all plague the authorities about the international fraud on ebay maybe we wil get somewhere in the end.

UK ebay seller’s 128GB Kingston flash drives must be counterfeits

leave a comment »

No one could sell genuine 128GB Kingston DataTraveler flash drives on ebay at this sort of price (or even twice this!) so we conclude that these flash drives from UK ebay seller cheskie1986 must be counterfeits bought from a fraudulent wholesale outlet.

A counterfeit flash drive is not only fake in the sense of being counterfeit (like a Gucci handbag or shoes – not from Gucci but probably still a functional handbag or pair of shoes) – they cease to be functional after a time because the capacity of the drive is fake. This eventually leads to all files being lost and corrupted.

If you buy a genuine 128GB Kingston flash drive (it is likely to cost you over £200) you will be able to verify the serial number with Kingston and register it. We are certain that Kingston will say they cannot verify the drives from this seller. We think the same is certain to apply to 128 GB flash drives from any seller on ebay offering these at under £200.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

This ebay item looks like a fake flash drive disguised as a fake lighter

leave a comment »

We think that as well as the lighter this flash drive is disguised as being non-functional the flash drive is also likely to become non functional too. Every single flash drive the fightflashfraud team tested that had a little capacity sticker like the one in this picture turned out to be fake capacity. Fake capacity flash drives corrupt files after a while and will usually cease to function at all at some point shortly after that.

We think that ebay seller verkaeuferkonto bought these from a fraudulent supplier. The seller may have no idea that these are likely to be fake.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

ebay flash fraud alert – seller supernova9106 using private auctions

leave a comment »

Seller supernova9106 (registered on ebay China) is using private auctions to sell flash drives. Use of private auctions by sellers offering USB flash drives or other flash memory items usually means one thing – fraud. Time and time again the fightflashfraud team has found that sellers who use private listings are selling counterfeit and fake capacity memory. We would be very surprised if this 16GB Kingston DataTraveler turned out to be genuine. If we are right then this USB flash drive corrupts files.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

8GB Sandisk Cruzer on ebay Germany seems too cheap to be genuine

We think these are too cheap to be genuine 8GB Sandisk Cruzer USB flash drives. We suspect that ebay seller mobilfunkdiscounter24 bought these from one of the wholesale outlets supplying counterfeit and fake capacity flash drives. If we are right then this flash drive is fake capacity and corrupts files.

Are this UK ebay seller’s 2GB Sandisk flash drives genuine?

leave a comment »

We don’t see how UK seller rick.b123 could sell genuine new 2GB Sandisk microskin flash drives quite this cheaply on ebay and make a profit, given the fees charged by ebay and paypal along with the postage costs. Even the cheapest e-tailers (who buy in the thousands) charge more than £4.50 for these.

This leads us to suspect they could be counterfeits purchased from a fraudulent supplier. If they were purchased from a fraudulent supplier they will be fake capacity flash drives. A fake capacity flash drive corrupts files.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Are UK ebay seller’s 16GB Sandisk flash drives genuine or fake?

leave a comment »

If this 16GB Sandisk USB flash drive (ebay item number 260560939485) listed on ebay UK by shamjeth1 is genuine then the seller is taking a big risk by listing at auction with a 99p start. Most flash memory sold at auction on ebay fetches below wholesale price so anyone selling like this risks making a loss.

Seller shamjeth1 was lucky last time he or she sold one (item number 260557243135 sold on 28th February) as it went for £18.00 so the inflated postage costs (£4.95) mean the seller would not have made a loss on that occasion. However, had the drive sold for much less, shamjeth1 would have made a loss if it was genuine. We may be wrong – but we have a lurking suspicion that this may not be a genuine Sandisk.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Confirmed A Kingston 128GB USB Flash Drive Genuine Now exists!

leave a comment »

Kingston now makes a 128GB usb flash drive! It is in the new DataTraveler series, the DT200 series. There is now one usb flash drive from Kingston that is a genuine 128GB capacity.

UPDATE 11/02/2010
Sadly for consumers the counterfeiters in China quickly replicated the casing of the DT200 flash drive and put inferior memory chips (of various capacities up to 4GB) inside and programmed the control chips to display higher capacities. Currently the DT200 is one of the most regularly sold counterfeit (and fake capacity) flash drives sold on ebay. For a look at a fake DT 200 see this article on Nandium’s blog.

Ebay Alert! UK eBay seller gangsta-memory lives up to his ID.

leave a comment »

It seems that the UK based ebay seller gangsta-memory (an ebay member since 6th December 2008) is living up to his choice of ID. It amazes fightflashfraud that so many fraudsters choose ID’s like this which seem to reveal their intentions. This seller was warned about the fake flash issue about a week ago but apparently chose not to respond to the ebayer who sent a message. We at fightflashfraud are left with the inevitable conclusion that gangsta-memory is a deliberate fraudster as the choice of ID suggests. We advise you not to buy from this seller. If you have already bought from this seller test the item with h2testw (free program) – we think it will fail the test. If so, please report the item to sosfakeflash by using the report a fake tab and open a paypal dispute with the seller.
Here is a picture of one of this seller’s obvious fakes:
