mr_buywise fake 64GB leather & steel Sony Vaio flash drive

leave a comment »

The picture in this ebay listing for a supposedly 64GB USB flash drive from mr_buywise has every possible indicator imaginable (bar one) that what we have here is a fake capacity flash drive that corrupts files. What makes us so certain that this is a fake? Here are some pointers:

  • There is no such thing as a Sony Vaio flash drive – they are all fakes from China.
  • All the leather and steel type flash drives tested by ourselves and others were fakes
  • Flash drives in this type of packaging (with or without Sony or Vaio names) were fake

So what is the one fake flash drive indicator we don’t see in this particular ebay listing?
The shiny capacity sticker that we see on many of them.

If you see a flash drive with any of these fake flash signatures be sure you are looking at a fake that will corrupt your files. We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

Obvious fake 64GB flash drive sold on ebay by nyor1 – beware of this seller

leave a comment »

Here is an interesting case of a fake flash drive sold on ebay. The supposedly 64GB USB flash drive on the left was sold on ebay at auction by nyor1 for 33 euros with 4 euros postage charge – it seems that someone doctored the picture used in the listing to remove an obvious pointer to the fact that it was fake capacity flash drive that corrupts files!

What do we think was removed from the picture in photoshop or some other image editing program? Why the Words Sony and Vaio of course!! If you are interested in checking what we’ve said you should be able to find the original listing for the next three or four weeks by searching for item number 220623415179 on ebay and can compare the listing picture there with other listings we have reported as Sony Vaio fakes of this type.

Our conclusions? We suspect the picture was probably doctored by nyor1 rather than whoever the drive was purchased from. If we are right, then this seller may be “testing the water” to see what he or she can get away with. If so, the seller is worth watching for future fraudulent activity. So far there is only one victim – but that’s where it alway starts!

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

64GB Sony flash drives on ebay not faulty but fake, test with h2testw

leave a comment »

Seller occbiker23 has discovered there is a problem with the Sony Vaio flash drives being sold in ebay listing number 330442217644 but does not seem to know why there is a problem with music and video files. We can explain.

Music and video files are much larger than document files – the reason there is a problem with them is that Sony Vaio flash drives don’t cope with larger files is that they are fake capacity counterfeits manufactured by fraudsters in China.

The true capacity of these flash drives is closer to 64 megabytes than 64 gigabytes so there just isn’t enough storage space for large files.

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

UPDATE 04/10/2010: Seller occbiker23 is now auctioning a 256GB Kingston DataTraveler 310 flash drive – we are pretty sure it will turn out to be a fake capacity counterfeit.

ebayer edgarantony lists fake flash drive bought from 09shameer

leave a comment »

UK ebay member edgarantony has listed this fake USB flash drive (or memory stick) at auction on ebay. All Sony Vaio USB flash drives are counterfeit, fake capacity and corrupt files – Sony do not use the Vaio name for flash drives! This drive was apparently bought from 09shameer (another UK ebay member) in February. None of those who bought this fake from 09shameer seemed to realise they had a fake. They probably just looked at what the operating system reported – big mistake!

We reported at the end of March that we thought there was something rather fishy about feedback for 09shameer in this post – we now wonder whether, in addition to the other matter that made us supicious before, there may be a connection between the ebay IDs edgarantony and 09shameer.

As UK ebay seller jimbob1052 has listed a 64GB Sony Vaio flash drive – an item that does not exist (except as a fake that corrupts files created by fraudsters in China) it seems that jimbob1052 bought from one of the fraudulent wholesale outlets in China which sell fake flash memory items.

This means that the 128GB Kingston DataTraveler flash drive in this listing will be counterfeit, fake capacity and corrupts files as will any other flash memory from this seller.

Is UK ebay seller 09shameer a deliberate fake flash fraudster?

On March the 9th we posted about the Sony Vaio flash drives listed by UK Seller 09shameer on ebay. There is no such thing as a Sony Vaio flash drive. We see this seller is still listing these fakes. 512GB Sony Vaio USB flash drive listed on ebay USA

There is no such thing as a Sony Vaio USB flash drive of any capacity. Sony only use the Vaio name for laptops/notebooks, not for flash drives. Sony do not sell ANY flash drives of capacities higher than 32GB.

There are no USB flash drives made by ANYONE in 512GB capacity (yet, anyway!) – the highest capacity currently available is 265GB and at present there is only one flash drive of that capacity on the market.

The USB flash drive on the left is a fake that corrupts files. Seller kashifmuhammad obviously got these from a fraudulent supplier.

This seller shows a screenshot – perhaps this seller is foolish enough to think that what the operating system shows as the capacity is the truth. It is not necessarily the truth – the operating system only shows you what someone programmed the device to show the operating system.

The 500GB Sony drive listed by kashifmuhammad is also fake – 500GB is not a size USB flash drives will ever be offered in, this size is only used for hard drives. UK based ebay seller gambinnno123 lists obvious fake flash drive

leave a comment »

UK seller gambinnno123 has listed one of the most obvious fake USB flash drives we have seen recently. The listing is on buy it now with buyer information hidden – pretty well a sure-fire sign of fraud. The packaging is very familiar – it was used for many fake drives a while back. If you see packaging like this steer well clear! The vaio trademark is reserved by Sony for laptops. It has never been used for flash drives. These items are 100% fake. Anyone who buys will end up losing their files and we think gambinnno123 knows it! If you have bought USB flash drives on ebay or elswhere on the internet, or are thinking of doing so (whether for personal use or to re-sell) we advise you to download Helen’s guide to fake flash. You can download it from the page Guide to fake flash listed at the top of the right-hand panel. It doesn’t cover everything but will give you some idea of what to look out for. gambino

Flash drives with Sony’s Vaio trademark on them are fake.

For the information of all buyers: The Sony trademark name Vaio is used only for laptops – it is not (and never has been) used for other items such as USB flash drives. Any flash drive displaying this name is an illegal counterfeit. Not only that – it is fake capacity and you will lose your files after a while if you buy a flash drive like the one below:

vaio

Drives like this are produced by fraudsters who program the control chip to display any capacity they like to the operating system. Use one and you will eventually lose your files. Do not buy a flash drive if you see the Vaio name either on the packaging or the drive itself!!
