We think these flash drives listed on ebay by schnecke66 are fake

leave a comment »

We don’t think the model of Kingston USB flash drive shown in this ebay listing from seller schnecke66 (registered on ebay Germany) was ever produced in a capacity over 32GB. We strongly suspect that this USB flash drive is counterfeit, fake capacity and corrupts files. This seller probably bought from a fraudulent supplier in China.

Recently Kingston has withdrawn a lot of models that have been reproduced by fraudsters in China – no doubt in the hope of putting a stop to counterfeiting.

Suspect auction for 256GB USB flash drive from US ebayer samova

leave a comment »

We are pretty sure that this 256GB USB flash drive listed on ebay USA by samova will turn out to be fake capacity – which corrupts files. The picture seems to show a Sandisk USB flash drive – but unless we are much mistaken Sandisk do not sell USB flash drives of this capacity.

This seller talks some gobledygook and rubbish in the listing – but we’re not going to waste time analysing it all and going through what is true and what is false – here is what the seller says:

100 PERCENT SOLID STATE FLASH DRIVE

BUY ONE GET ONE HALF PRICE. YOU CAN CHOOSE THE SAME UNIT OR THE 512 GB USB 2.0 THUMB DRIVE WITH A MINIATURE SATA HARD DRIVE AS THE STORAGE MEDIUM INSTEAD OF SOLID STATE SEMICONDUCTOR MEMORY. JUST TAKE YOUR INVOICE COST AND INCREASE IT BY 50 PERCENT WHEN YOU GO TO PAYPAL.

MIGHT NOT LOOK LIKE THE PICTURE IN MY AD. I CANNOT GIVE YOU FAST SHIPPING AT THIS TIME. I AM STILL TRYING TO GET THINGS SORTED OUT WITH MY SUPPLIER.

YOU WILL HAVE TO BE PATIENT WITH 10-15 DAY SHIPPING TIME UNTIL I CAN GET A HANDLE ON THE SHIPPING AND THEN I CAN OFFER 4-5 DAY SHIPPING TIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

WOW!!!! THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!!!

256 GB (NOT MB) CAPACITY ON A LITTLE FLASH DRIVE??? THE 256 GB FLASH DRIVE IS THE LARGEST CAPACITY DRIVE THAT IS ALL SEMICONDUCTOR MEMORY. THE LARGER USB 2.0 THUMB DRIVES SUCH AS THE 320 GB AND THE 512 GB CONTAIN A MINIATURE SATA HARD DRIVE THAT ACTS AS THE STORAGE MEDIUM INSTEAD OF SEMICONDUCTOR MEMORY. IT IS GUARANTEED FOR FIVE YEARS SO IF YOU DROP IT AND IT STOPS WORKING JUST SEND IT BACK TO THE FACTORY FOR REPLACEMENT UNDER THE 5 YEAR WARRENTY. WARRENTY PAPERS ARE INCLUDED WITH EACH USB 2.0 THUMB DRIVE.

FLASH DRIVES WITH SEMICONDUCTOR MEMORY ONLY GO UP TO 256 GB.

ANYTHING HIGHER THAN 256 GB USES A MINIATURE SATA HARD DRIVE AS THE STORAGE MEDIUM.

YOU MUST MAKE THE DECISION OF WHICH ONE TO SELECT BASED ON WHAT TYPE OF DATA YOU WANT TO STORE, KEEP IN MIND THAT THE ONES OVER 256 GB ARE MECHANICAL AND SOMEWHAT MORE VULNERABLE THAN THE FULL SEMICONDUCTOR (FLASH) DRIVES 256KB AND BELOW.

128 FULL LENGTH MOVIES IN YOUR WATCH POCKET? GET A PHILIPS DVP 5992 DVD PLAYER. IT HAS A USB PORT AND IT PLAYS MOST OF THE FORMATS. THERE ARE LOTS OF REFURBS OF THIS MODEL ON THE INTERNET PROBABLY BECAUSE IT IS BUILT DOWN TO A PRICE AND NOT UP TO A STANDARD.

WHAT WILL THOSE ASIANS THINK OF NEXT?

YES, THE 512GB USB 2.0 THUMB DRIVE IS HERE AND I HAVE THEM IN STOCK.

THESE 512GB USB 2.0 THUMB DRIVES ARE NOT EVEN BEING IMPORTED INTO THE UNITED STATES BY THE BIG ELECTRONIC COMPANIES AT THIS TIME.

YOU HAVE ACCESS TO THE “ASIAN SUPPY” THAT IS ROLLED OUT BEFORE THEY SEND THEM TO THE UNITED STATES.

THE STORAGE CAPACITY OF THESE DEVICES IS EXPANDING EXPONENTIALLY AND PRICES ARE FALLING DRAMATICALLY.

ALL OF IT IS IN BIG SHOUTY RED CAPITAL LETTERS!

-oh and by the way flash memory prices are not falling anymore (as they did in 2007/8) – they are in fact rising now!

We advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

These flash drives from ebay seller rieswan will corrupt files

leave a comment »

Seller rieswan (registered on ebay Germany) seems to realise that these are not genuine Sony flash drives but does not seem to understand what this means. Let us make this crystal clear for everyone:

  1. They are counterfeit and therefore their sale is an illegal act that could lead to imprisonment.
  2. The capacity shown when you plug a counterfeit USB flash drive into the computer is false – they have been programmed to display a fake capacity to the operating system.
  3. A fake capacity flash drive inevitably corrupts the user’s files once the true capacity is reached,

In conclusion – no one with any sense should either buy or sell such items!!

“Defective” USB flash drives listed on ebay – not defective – FAKE!!

with one comment

A lot of ebay members worldwide are now listing “defective” flash drives for sale. They are (for the most part) not defective – they are deliberately created fake capacity flash drives. A fake capacity flash drive corrupts files.

The majority of the models of flash drive listed on ebay sites as “faulty” or “defective are familiar to the team at fightflashfraud – but the one shown on the left is new to us.

Selller chu19 (ID registered on ebay Germany on 18.03.10) had two active listings for this supposedly 128GB model of USB flash drive when we looked. The seller lists it as being from Xisstech – we could find absolutely no trace of Xisstech.

We’d be interested to hear from seller chu19 about where these came from. We strongly advise all ebayers not to buy “defective” flash memory – you can not reliably “fix” fake flash memory items. We also strongly advise everyone who buys flash memory items to test them with the free program h2testw irrespective of where they were purchased – otherwise you run the risk of data loss and corruption.

This USB flash drive sold on ebay USA by petr6429 is fake fake fakity fake. Not made by Sony and not 32GB! This is a fake capacity flash drive that corrupts files. In the listing this seller says:

IT’S CAN BE A PERFFECT GIFT FOR ANYONE!!!! (everyone is gonna be happy,if they get one of those)

CAUTION!!!!!!!!!! BIG SECRET TIP:

DON’T , NEVER FORMAT THE USB 32GB FLASH DRIVE!!!!!!(if it’s more then 8gb – never format it)
(it can broke your usb flash drive)

All usb flash drivers, are 100% in working, brand new condition, and even before we send them, we test each one, to make sure!!!!!!
So, you’ll get 100% wokring 32GB USB Flash Drive!!!! – NEVER FORMAT IT!!!!!!!
If you will format it, and it’s gonna broke – NO REFUND or RETURN!!!

Ahem – we beg to differ! We think anyone who gets one of these will be very unhappy indeed when their valuable files start to vanish or become corrupt! There is no problem with formatting a GENUINE usb flash drive – of course there IS a problem if it is fake capacity! The reason that people have problems with formatting drives over 8GB is that the majority are fakes.

Genuine sellers accept returns in the unlikely event of problems. Seller petr6429 says they are all tested – well we don’t know what this person thinks testing consists of, but it certainly won’t have been a proper test with h2testw!

UPDATE 02/05/2010
It seems that five of these have now been sold. So far three ebayers who bought these fakes have left feedback, all positive. However the comment “Seller Handled Correctly.” suggests that perhaps one of them complained and was refunded. There is a current listing for another one, this time listed with the heading:
Upgrade from 128gb Kingston usb. “Security featured”
For sale 248gb Data Traveler. Brand new. BEAT THAT!!!!

Upgraded from 128GB? what sort of nonsense is this?? They never had a capacity anywhere near 128GB in the first place!! We wonder if this seller was previously suspended by ebay for fraud as the ebay ID was changed from from mrfiza to no1superstor on 31-Jan-10.

tianxiadahan lists 64GB Sony Vaio on ebay: this is a fake flash drive

leave a comment »

Seller tianxiadahan is undoubtedly a member of one of the ebay fraud gangs in China that sell fake flash memory which corrupts files. There is no such thing as a genuine Sony Vaio USB flash drive – they were dreamed up by fraudsters! Anyone who buys one of these USB flash drives will eventually find that it corrupts their files. Another seller in China yemenera is listing the same drive at the same ludicrously low price – even if this was not such an obvious fake, a price this low is a dead givaway that these were dodgy drives.

The buy it now price in this ebay listing from 5901davidc is just too low for a genuine 128GB Kingston DataTraveler 200 USB flash drive. It is very likely that this seller bought from a fraudulent supplier. If this is the case then the flash drive will be counterfeit, fake capacity and will cause files to be corrupted as a result.

Warning – do not buy flash drives on ebay from intelseller2010

leave a comment »

The two USB flash drives pictured above are listed for sale on ebay by intelseller2010 – another fraudulent seller from China selling fake flash memory. The Kingston on the left (if it was genuine) would be 32GB not 128G – it is a fake produced by a fraud ring operating in China.

We have heard whispers about workers slyly producing casings on the side at the factory where genuine Kingston drives are produced – but we have no way of saying whether such rumours are true or false.

The one on the right is pure invention on the part of fraudsters in China. There is no such thing as a Sony Vaio drive of any capacity whatsoever – so any you see advertised are certain to be fakes. Both these USB flash drives are not only counterfeit but also fake capacity – which corrupts files.

512GB Kingston USB flash drive on ebay – fake that will corrupt files!

with 4 comments

The flash drive in this ebay listing by grantomme (registered in Canada) shows a counterfeit and fake capacity USB flash drive that corrupts files. How do we know? Beware of ebay seller kibykiby1 – the Kingston DT200 is not made in 256GB capacity!

The USB flash drives pictured in this listing by kibykiby1 (an ebay seller registered in the United States) are counterfeit and fake capacity. A fake capacity USB flash drive inevitably corrupts files. The Kingston DT200 is not made in 256GB capacity and DT200 flash drives are colour coded according to capacity. The flash drives pictured in this listing are counterfeits produced by fraudsters in China.

For goodness sake ebay sellers – at least check brand name items you plan to sell on the website of company concerned to see whether what you are selling actually exists!!

We wonder (in the light of fake flash listings from this seller: item numbers 230454388645 and 230454388224) if the software from this seller is genuine? Flash memory is by no means the only countefeit thing sold on ebay!!

UK ebay seller urbanturban obviously does not understand the fake flash memory problem!!

leave a comment »

It seems that UK ebay member urbanturban bought a large number of obviously fake 128GB USB flash drives from a fraudulent supplier (probably in China) and discovered there is a problem with them. It seems this seller did no research before buying these to sell on ebay.

Please, pretty please?? Do some research before buying flash memory items to sell on ebay and test at least a 10% sample (wherever you bought!) to save both yourself and your buyers from greif.

The flash drive in this listing is not faulty it is a fake capacity USB flash drive that was deliberately programmed to show a false capacity to the operating system. A fake capacity flash drive always corrupts files after a while.

We doubt that urbanturban is a fraudster – it is more likely that he (or she) is simply an ordinary ebayer who fell foul of a fraudulent supplier. We hope this seller will do the honourable thing and refund any buyers – a painful financial loss, but the only honest thing to do in this situation. If urbanturban wants to get in touch we will do our best to help the seller get a refund from the supplier – sadly this is often extremely difficult.

ebay seller search852 looks like a proper little fake flash fraudster!

leave a comment »

It is absolutely impossible to sell a genuine 32GB flash drive for £20 including post and packing on ebay without making a massive (around £25) loss! Anyone selling genuine items would not make the mistake of listing at auction with such a low start price again. Seller search852 is registered guess where? Hong Kong. One of the main shipping points for fake flash memory items that corrupt files.

Do not buy flash memory items on ebay that are shipped from the far east. Do not buy flash memory items on ebay that are much cheaper than you can buy them elsewhere. In fact, unless you see an ebay seller who provides a lot of information, including a warning about fakes, don’t consider buying flash memory items on ebay at all!!

128GB USB flash drive from ebay seller asfauih_65466 is fake and corrupts files

Seller asfauih_65466 is yet another ebay fake flash fraudster based in Hong Kong and the USB flash drive in this listing is counterfeit, fake capacity and corrupts files. How do we know? Because at this seller’s price you’d be very unlikely to get a genuine 16GB USB flash drive on ebay, let alone a 128GB one!

Over 80 ebayers already seem to have fallen for this scam – be aware that you cannot manufacture a 128GB USB flash drive for $22 – let alone sell them on ebay for this. The main cost in manufacture of flash memory devices is the flash memory chips themselves – and the chips to make a genuine 128GB flash drive would cost a lot more than this!

fake flash seller new-888 has another go at fraud on ebay

Fraudulent ebay seller new-888 was caught selling fake flash memory last year but has decided to have another go at defrauding people on ebay. We find it almost unbeleivable that (despite new-888 having a feedback score of 1 with only 60% positive and a negative that clearly indicates the seller sold fake flash before) six ebayers bid on this counterfeit and fake capacity flash drive that corrupts files.

Sometimes we despair about getting the message across. Some of the people involved in blogs like this one are IT professionals who fell foul of fake flash a long time ago because we’d bought other things at good prices on ebay and had become too trusting – we did not have our thinking heads on when we put in bids on flash drives, memory cards etc.

Profit margins on flash memory is in fact very low – buy cheap and you will no doubt pay dear by finding that all the hard work you did on photos, sound files, videos, databases, spreadsheets, word documents, presentations (or whatever it is you saved to a fake flash device like this) is completely trashed once you reach the actual (usually tiny) capacity of fakes.

This 128GB Kingston DataTraveler USB flash drive from ebay seller gfxguru00 is pretty certain to be counterfeit and fake capacity. A false capacity USB flash drive always corrupts files.
